The best Pinterest trends and tips for food bloggers to focus on for the month of March to increase traffic to their page and website!
[This guide was originally posted on Feb 25, 2019, but was updated Feb 26, 2020 to reflect annual changes.]
Welcome to March! Can you believe it?! We will be drinking green beer (or green cocktails, because beer is disgusting) hopefully in the sunshine before we know it! I’m hoping you found my January and February Pinterest guides helpful, which is why you’ve come back this month for some new trends and tips!
In case you’re new to my monthly guides, each month I will share a post that highlights all of the Pinterest food-related trends that I believe to be the most important for food bloggers to focus on that month, so that they may fully utilize Pinterest to increase their traffic. I’ll also be sharing some tips and tricks each month that you can use to help you improve your Pinterest page!
The best way to utilize this information is to create and push out new content that emphasizes these ingredients and/or topics and recycle any old content that you have by republishing the pins and recycling them onto your personal boards, group boards, and Tailwind tribes to help increase their traffic. Also, when pinning content from other bloggers, keep these trends in mind and try to focus on adding this type of content to your boards since this is the type of information that users are going to be searching for. The more you provide users with what they are looking for the better your traffic will be!
If you find these tips helpful, please be sure to subscribe to my email list so that you will receive an update right to your inbox when I post a new monthly trend and tip post! (Plus, you’ll get some scrumptious recipes in there, too! 🙂 )
So as we move into March, we’re going to be focusing on some game day goodies for March madness, finishing up our St. Patrick’s day pins and starting to look ahead to Easter! Plus there’s still some healthy, low carb food to be had this month!
Pro tip: The links in this post are linked to some of my most popular relevant pins according to my Tailwind pin inspector. Repinning them would help boost your monthly views/traffic! 🙂
Expected Trends
- March Madness
- Yep. It’s happening. I hate basketball but I do love a good March Madness party, some festive basketball-shaped treats, or a reason to grill out in the middle of a Spring blizzard. (Read as: eat the food that the BBQ brothers are grilling up while I sip wine and play on Pinterest inside…). March Madness is the perfect time to be pinning any basketball-related food items, party setups or casual tablescapes that can be used for hosting an MM party or any grill favorites that otherwise may only be popular during the summer months!
- Gameday foods/party foods
- Gameday foods/party foods will be pretty popular this month, as people will be looking to stock up on some March Madness munchies. Think finger foods, burgers, shareable appetizers, game day spreads, dips, desserts, etc.!
- Chicken Wings
- Staying true to our month of MM, chicken wings will be oddly popular this month. Get crazy with the flavored chicken wings, think about air fryer wings for a healthier alternative, or even branch out into chicken bites as another variety!
- Bacon
- I mean…when is bacon not popular? This month it will be extra popular due to the gameday parties (as well as the keto trend below!) Bacon-wrapped apps will be trending due to the shareable/finger food aspect of game day goodies! Bacon dips, bacon explosions, or even bacon desserts will be highly searched during March so go crazy with bacon this month!
Unexpected Trends
- Keto Food
- The keto diet is still very popular this year. Keto recipes are spreading like wildfire on Pinterest right now and are expected to be popular again this month as people search for keto game day foods, keto meal plans, keto snacks, or keto desserts.
Holidays/Important Events
- St. Patrick’s Day
- We talked about prepping for St. Patrick’s day last month, but you’ll still want to push out your St. Patty’s day pins through the middle of February until the big day. Remember: all the clovers. All the rainbows. All the leprechauns. All the green cocktails. And don’t forget about the classic Irish food as well! Corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie, Irish stew, or basically anything that involves Guinness. Irish Soda Bread has also been extremely popular on Pinterest recently!
- Easter
- Easter is April 12 this year, so March will be a popular time to start stocking up on potential recipes for the big day! Now is a good time to start saving Easter hams, Easter eggs, Easter desserts, bunny shaped recipes, Easter breakfasts, and more!
In Season Produce
Naturally you’ll want to focus on any produce that is currently in season each month! To help with this, I have put together a monthly seasonal produce guide (with tips on how to choose, store, and cook with each ingredient!) My March produce guide can be found here, with associated recipes, but here is a list of in-season produce to focus on:
- Artichokes
- Asparagus
- Kiwi
- Oranges
- Peas
- Pineapple
- Shallots
- Spring greens (Arugula, Spinach, Lettuce, Swiss Chard)
Top 3 Tips for March
Here are my top 3 Pinterest tips for this month!
- Use proper image ratios
- Have you ever saved an image on Pinterest and it looked kinda wonky? Like the image was too small so there was white space around it or the photo was too grainy? These problems come from improper image ratios. Sometimes the recommended ratio changes, but currently, Pinterest recommends a ratio of 600×900 px (ratio fo 2:3). So keep this in mind when you’re creating images for Pinterest! (Also, those suuuuper long pins that you see on Pinterest? AKA “giraffe pins”? There was a time where those were very popular because their larger size drew more attention, but because they’re no longer the proper ratio, they’re no longer favored on Pinterest. So it’s in your best interest not to create those!)
- Use good Pinterest descriptions
- Make sure when you’re creating a pin that you write a good description for it! These words will be used in the search bar of Pinterest to find your pin so the more descriptive, the better! It doesn’t have to be super long, but whatever you do, don’t leave it blank (that’s a Tailwind nightmare!)
- Use hashtags in your Pinterest descriptions
- Once upon a time this was a no-no. But in the ever-changing world of social media, hashtags are now useful on Pinterest. Try to add about 4-5 at the end of your description. Also, remember that hashtags function differently than descriptive text on Pinterest, so don’t use hashtags in place of descriptive text!
